Liquor/ABC License Attorney

What are alcohol licensing laws and why do they matter? As Brockwell Smith’s food and beverage clients will certainly tell you, the alcoholic beverage industry is highly regulated, especially in Alabama. Liquor/ABC license laws govern the way businesses purchase, sell, and/or manufacture alcohol on their premises. Why do these types of laws exist? One way the federal, state, and local governments try to promote the safety of its residents is to ensure liquor and other alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed responsibly. To that end, Alabama ABC licensees are subject to strict alcohol laws and oversight.

Brockwell Smith represents virtually every type of alcohol-related business in (and outside) Alabama—breweries, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, bars, clubs, and others. Our firm has assisted clients with the most complex licensing applications, advocating for our clients but also maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Alabama ABC Board. Our goal in an Alabama ABC application is to counsel clients through the application process, avoid unnecessary delay, and obtain the right license for the clients as efficiently as possible.

As important, Brockwell Smith also assists clients well after they receive their alcohol license. As is the case with most highly regulated industries, Alabama ABC licensees must comply with complex laws at the local, state, and federal levels. Understanding these laws isn’t easy. For example, each municipality has its own laws regulating a business. The State of Alabama also has its own laws, rules, and regulations governing the manufacture, sale, and purchase of alcoholic beverages. On top of that, the federal government also governs the industry through the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (the TTB). With all these layers, issues can pop up at any time. Our firm has provided counsel to alcohol licensees at every level of government oversight and every phase of their existence—from formation to application, audit, citation and appeals, expansion and sale…you get the idea.

Life can be tricky for an Alabama alcohol licensee. Your alcohol license is one of your most valuable assets. You need to protect it. Instead of making a critical mistake during the application process that could cost you months of delay, or during your operations that could result in suspension (or even revocation!) of your license, contact Brockwell Smith and let us guide you through the journey so you can focus on doing what you do best—running and growing a successful business.
